Volac acquired the Liverpool site and dockside warehouse for its
factory in 1985.
The building itself dates back to the 1890s and is situated on
South Canada dock, adjacent to one of Liverpools bulk liquid
berths.
The proximity to this bulk liquid import facility rendered the site
ideal for Volac to establish their Megalac® manufacturing operation.
Vegetable palm fatty acids are imported from Malaysia, and are
pumped directly into storage at a nearby bulk tank storage facility,
from where they are returned via the dock pipeline to the Volac
factory.
The fatty acids are combined with calcium to produce Megalac® in a
unique process, patented by Volac.
Megalac®, a calcium salt of Palm Oil Fatty Acids is a concentrated
source of digestible undegradable energy (ME 33.25 MJ/kg DM). It
does not interfere with rumen function, as the calcium protects the
fatty acids against breakdown in the rumen and they pass intact to
the lower gut where they can be digested with maximum efficiency.
Megalac® provides high yielding dairy cows with more energy for milk
than any other feed ingredient (Net Energy of Lactation measurements
on file).
Megalac® is the world's leading brand, the most independently
researched and the only protected fat that is manufactured in a
FEMAS certified factory. It is also now produced under licence in
the USA by Church & Dwight and by AgroBest in the Czech Republic.
1992 brought the launch of Megapro®, which is Megalac® co-processed
with double zero rapeseed meal to increase the rumen bypass protein
to over 70%. This provides an effective combination of
rumen-protected fat and protein to optimise the benefits of
protected energy in the ruminant.
A further variation, Megapro Gold®, was developed in 1994. Megapro
Gold® is composed of Megapro® and whey permeate, which acts as a
rumen conditioner and provides a source of fermentable energy.
In 1996, we discovered that forming a calcium salt was a simple and
extremely cost-effective technique of providing highly protected
methionine, so we co-processed Megalac® with methionine to produce
Megalac Plus®. Protected methionine and energy has been shown to
improve milk yield, protein and yield persistency, as well
improving milk from forage, body condition and fertility.
All Volac products are produced to the highest quality standards. The
Liverpool factory is ISO 9001:2000 and FEMAS certified, to ensure our
products meet high standards of raw material traceability and quality
assurance throughout manufacture
