Colostrum of the right quality, and quantity, given to the calf at the right time, is the cornerstone for the success of any calf rearing enterprise as it supplies both essential nutrients and antibodies.
A new-born calf has no protective antibodies to protect against disease challenges and these can only be absorbed via colostrum. Poor health, low growth rates and high mortality are most often seen in calves that have received inadequate colostrum.

There are a number of ways to ensure adequate colostrum. The appropriate method will vary, but the key is to have a management plan for each calf and to follow it rigorously.
Key to success is Colostrum. Have a plan and stick to it !

Use of colostrum alternatives
Colostrum alternatives should be used when fresh or frozen bovine colostrum is not available. Useful in an emergency, or as a ‘top up’ when an unknown quantity of colostrum has been suckled from the dam. Check nutrient density of product before selection. High protein options (+75%) such as Volac Calf Volostrum have been demonstrated to work effectively in trials.
