Volac teams up with leading Sustainable Palm refinery - New Britain Oils

The world’s first available segregated, fully traceable and certified sustainable palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), a by-product of palm oil refining, will be incorporated into Megalac, the rumen protected fat which improves dairy cow milk yield, body condition and fertility. The arrangement has been made between the dairy nutrition company, Volac International and New Britain Oils following the opening of its £20m refinery at Liverpool last year. The agreement is anticipated to supply over 25% of Volac’s annual requirements for PFAD by 2012.

“Previously, Volac International’s supply of PFAD was solely from members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) whose objective is to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil, and our FEMAS accredited supply is fully compliant with routine testing carried out for all relevant quality parameters,” explains Volac’s Jeannie Everington. “However we have a commitment to sustainable global food production and believe this can only be achieved by working closely with our customers, suppliers and the industry to set and achieve realistic and relevant improvement targets.

“New Britain Oils provided us with a unique opportunity to introduce new segregated oil with traceability to origin, and the proximity of their refinery to our Megalac factory in Liverpool is a further benefit in reducing handling and transport costs.”

New Britain Oils’ Andy Worrall comments: “Our parent company, New Britain Palm Oil Ltd, is the largest integrated palm oil company in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. We were one of the first companies to be independently certified against the RSPO production standard, the first company to include smallholders within our certification and the first company to have our supply chain independently verified for its traceability. We are pleased to supply Volac with Segregated Sustainable PFAD and are delighted that another important supply chain within the food industry is recognising the importance of sourcing sustainably.”
