120 cow pedigree Jersey herd; average 6,800 litres
Jerseys were introduced to Tagg Lane three years ago. The Boams are focused on developing a high health herd which block calves between May and July to minimise risk of scours. It is BVD accredited, and working towards Johne’s and IBR accreditation.
All heifer replacement calves are snatched at birth and fed three litres of Volostrum, a freeze dried pasteurised colostrum, from a bucket.
Each calf is introduced to an individual pen, fed daily two, two litre feeds of warm Heiferlac from a bucket system until weaning at 42 days.
Ad lib straw is available plus starter pellets. By weaning each calf is eating up to 2kg per day.
Posting weaning, the calves are introduced to groups of 10, an 18% crude protein concentrate and straw before turning out to clean pasture.
Heifers are served with sexed semen at 290kgs target weight at 14 months.
