Follow-up to field trial with UltraSorb R 3.0
Last winter, Volac and agricultural contractor Koeienvoeren.nl investigated the mycotoxin burden in dairy cow rations. Almost every ration tested contained mycotoxins. Six dairy farmers, including Jacobus Eppinga from Sondel, are taking part in a follow-up programme.
‘Things are going well: good production and a lower cell count’
Jacobus Eppinga has 200 dairy cows in Sondel, Friesland, with a rolling annual yield of 12,000 litres. Since April, the cows have been receiving 10 grams of UltraSorb R 3.0 daily. “The cows look good and things are going well. We are averaging about 40 litres a day. To me, that is a sign that they are feeling good.”
Even during the first heatwave, he says the cows recovered quickly. “They performed a little less well for a few days, but soon returned to their previous level.”
Since Eppinga started feeding UltraSorb R 3.0, the average somatic cell count has fallen from around 150,000 to about 100,000 cells per millilitre, with readings as low as 69,000. Eppinga is enthusiastic and is considering continuing. “For 200 cows it costs less than 10 euros per day. With a small increase in production, the investment pays for itself quickly.”
